There's a specific kind of Saturday in northeastern Alabama — sky impossibly blue, Talladega foothills rolling out behind the endzone, the smell of charcoal drifting off campus — that makes you understand why people drive two hours for a 24,000-seat FBS game. Backdropped by the mountains of northeastern Alabama, JSU Stadium sits on the southern portion of the Jacksonville State campus, and Jacksonville itself is a relatively small town by FBS standards, just over 12,000 people, with every bit of a cozy small-town feel. As an away fan, you'll be welcomed, largely unbothered, and mildly confused by a stadium whose upper tower is literally a dormitory — but we'll get to that.

What a Trip Here Costs, in Numbers

College football tickets on Vivid Seats are listed for all 3 upcoming games, starting at $35 (FIU Panthers, Oct 13).

The airport for this trip is Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International (BHM), 60 miles from the stadium.

The next 12 months bring 3 visiting teams, none of them based within 300 miles. The longest trip: FIU Panthers, 640 miles each way.

Ticket prices checked Oct 3.

Ticket figures are each game's lowest listed price with estimated fees added. Distances are straight-line, stadium to airport and stadium to stadium.

How to Get to Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium (Bus, Driving, Rideshare)

Let's be direct: there is no public transit to this stadium. Jacksonville, Alabama does not have a bus line or commuter rail serving the campus. You are driving or ridesharing, full stop.

The nearest major airport is Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM), which is 77 miles from the center of Jacksonville, AL. The driving distance is about 72.9 miles, which typically takes around 1 hour and 31 minutes by car. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is also an option, sitting about 103 miles from Jacksonville. The driving distance from ATL is around 105.2 miles, with an average travel time of about 2 hours and 7 minutes. BHM is slightly closer and has less traffic on a football Saturday; ATL has more flight options. Rent a car from either — there is no realistic alternative once you land.

Fans coming from the west through Birmingham or from Atlanta to the east will most likely use I-20, leaving just under a thirty-minute drive through Oxford and Anniston. State Road 21 leads from I-20 right to the JSU campus. For rideshare, Uber and Lyft do operate in the area, but coverage is thin in a town this size. Book in advance and don't expect surge pricing to conjure cars that don't exist.

Driving: This is actually one of the better egress situations in college football, because Jacksonville is small and the road network empties quickly. State Road 21 leads from I-20 right to the JSU campus — that's also your main exit artery. The lots directly adjacent to the stadium take 20–30 minutes to clear after a game ends; the free remote lots near the library clear faster because the foot traffic disperses earlier. Wait 15–20 minutes after the final whistle if you parked close, or leave with two minutes left in the fourth quarter if you're not invested in the result.

Rideshare: This is where Jacksonville's small-town nature works against you. Surge pricing will kick in, and the pool of available drivers is genuinely limited. Walk away from the stadium — toward the town center to the south, about a 10-minute walk — before requesting your ride. You'll get a driver faster and cheaper than if you open the app standing in the stadium parking lot with 5,000 other people. Budget for 1.5–2x normal fares in the 30 minutes immediately post-game.

Shuttle: All parking lots reopen immediately after the game. If you came in on the free shuttle from Pete Mathews Coliseum or Houston Cole Library, the shuttles continue running post-game — expect a 15–25 minute wait for your bus depending on crowd flow. This is genuinely the most stress-free exit if you're not in a hurry. The opinionated tip: skip the stadium entirely at the final whistle, walk to the Food Truck Rally exit on the east end, and let the main crowd fight over Gate A. You'll be moving in five minutes.

FIU Panthers, Missouri State Bears, and Sam Houston Bearkats are all heading to Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium this season. Plan your away trip:

Tailgating and Parking at Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium

Parking here is a pleasant surprise compared to what you deal with at bigger FBS programs. Parking is available for $10 at nearby Stephenson, Dixon, and Curtiss Halls, but lots at the Theron Montgomery Building, Bibb Graves Hall, Ayers Hall, Crow Hall, Daugette Hall, and around Trustee Circle are free.

Free parking areas that provide shuttle service to and from the stadium are available at Stone Center, Brewer Hall, Rowe Hall, Houston Cole Library, and Pete Mathews Coliseum. Meehan Hall Suite and Club Level ticket holders can park in the RED LOT in front of Meehan Hall, while White Complex suite holders use the ORANGE LOT on the west side of the stadium. RED, ORANGE, GOLD, BLUE, and PURPLE Lots located around the stadium are permit lots requiring a pre-issued parking pass. For most away fans, the free remote lots with shuttle service are genuinely your best play — arrive 90 minutes early, park at Pete Mathews Coliseum, hop the shuttle, and you're at the gates with time to walk the tailgate scene.

Where to Stay Near Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium

Jacksonville doesn't have a hotel row — it has a few scattered options and then 20 miles of Alabama highway. The closest hotels cluster near the campus along Pelham Road. The most convenient hotel for JSU visitors is located just over a mile from the stadium at 1041 JD & L Dr — book early for football weekends as it's often the first to fill up. A budget-friendly option is also located near the university campus at 815 Pelham Rd S, a practical choice for fans looking for a simple stay near gameday action.

If you want more options (and more nightlife), consider staying in Anniston or Oxford, about 20 minutes west on I-20. Both have chains — Hampton Inns, Marriotts, the usual — at lower gameday premiums than you'd pay in a college town. The tradeoff is a post-game highway drive when everyone else is doing the same. Honestly, if it's a night game and you want to drink, Pelham Road is your friend even if the hotel is a bit tired.

Where to Eat and Drink at Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium

Struts of Jacksonville, a traditional sports bar, and Mason's BBQ are both on Mountain Street NW and are the most conveniently located spots to grab a pre-game bite. Struts is the classic dive-bar-adjacent college spot — sort of a divey sports bar right in the heart of JSU, known for wings, burgers, and typical bar food, with a friendly vibe from a college town staple. Get there early on game day; it fills up fast and the kitchen slows down accordingly.

Mason's BBQ is your smoked meat option within walking distance of campus — Alabama BBQ standards apply, which means the bar is high. Don't skip it.

About a mile south of campus is Jacksonville's town center, with a handful of restaurants and the Apothecary Draft House. The Apothecary is genuinely the most interesting drinking spot in town: it features 42 self-pour taps of craft beer, cider, wine, and cocktails. It's a short rideshare or an easy walk south from campus, opens at noon on Saturdays, and allows you to pay by the ounce at the taps — a welcome upgrade from the usual small-town options.

Cooter Brown's Rib Shack also turns up consistently on local best-of lists and is worth a detour if you want serious ribs before kickoff.

While the surrounding area offers plenty of options, fans can also find satisfying food and drinks inside the stadium itself.

Fans have a choice of traditional concessions including hot dogs, chili dogs, cheeseburgers, nachos, fountain Coke products, popcorn, peanuts, and candy. The real move is the Food Truck Rally behind the east end zone: it features a mix of Brix 'n Stix Wood Fired Pizza, TJ's Crawfish Shack, RNB Finz and Chicks, Kona Ice, Main Squeeze Lemonade, and WOW American Eats. All payment options are cashless — credit/debit cards or Apple, Google, or Samsung Pay only. Expect to spend around $10–14 for a meal item and $7–9 for a beer; leave the cash in your pocket.

Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium Bag Policy, Gates, and Game Day Tips

Jacksonville State has implemented a clear bag policy for fans entering all athletic venues at JSU. Each ticket holder is allowed one large clear bag — a one-gallon Ziploc style bag or a clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bag that does not exceed 12" by 6" by 12" — plus a small clutch purse. The small clutch purse, with or without a handle or strap, is permitted along with either the 12" by 6" by 12" clear tote or the one-gallon freezer bag.

All gates open two hours prior to kickoff. There are four access points for ticket holders: the main ticket plaza and Gate A are in the southeast corner of the stadium, with two additional access points at Gates B and C on the northeast portion along Trustee Circle. Another ticket booth is located at Gate D on the northwest corner. Away fans tend to be scattered throughout the general seating areas; head to Gate A to get your bearings first. Bring sunscreen for day games — this is an open-air stadium with limited shade, especially on the visiting side.

Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium Accessibility: ADA Seating, Elevators, and Accessible Entry

A new Accessible Parking Lot has been created next to Curtiss Hall between the ORANGE and GOLD Lots. Fans requiring accessible parking may park there and enter the stadium at nearby Gate D, which is directly adjacent to a new ADA-compliant seating section inside the stadium.

The seven-story tower (Meehan Hall) houses the press box and skyboxes in the upper floors; elevator access is available within that structure for suite and club level guests. For general seating, the venue has been gradually improving ADA infrastructure as part of recent facility upgrades. If you have specific accessibility needs, contact JSU Athletics ahead of your visit — the venue's ticket office can advise on the best gate and seating for your situation. Attendees with medical needs will be directed to the Main Ticket Plaza on the east end of the stadium for specialized screening and entrance.

Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium Away Fan Guide: Seating, Atmosphere, and What to Expect

Outside of the club level seats, any of the seating options get fans right on top of the action and give great views of the game. The stadium is compact enough that there's genuinely not a bad seat in the lower bowl.

The big caveat for away fans: sun. Given the orientation of the field, there is not a lot of relief from the sun — the best bet to limit the sun's impact is sitting on the home side of the field toward the eastern end of the stadium, because fans on the visiting north side will have the sun in their face for much of the game. If you have a choice, grab seats in the south stands or eastern end zone sections. The north side visiting area is where away fans naturally congregate, but for a day game, you'll pay for it with squinting. Sunglasses and a hat are not optional.

Away fans should note that while home seating fills quickly, visiting supporters have their own dedicated section.

JSU Stadium is one of the smaller FBS stadiums in the country, but despite its capacity of 24,000, it can be a raucous home field. The fans are passionate but not hostile — this is a program that spent decades as an FCS powerhouse and only moved to FBS in 2023, so the fanbase skews toward football-literate people who actually care about the game rather than casual spectators who show up for a social event. The Marching Southerners are the pulse of the stadium's liveliness — it's not just the spirit of the fight song, but band members who actively lead chants and build enthusiasm for the game's biggest moments. The one thing that genuinely catches first-time visitors off guard: the dorm floors built into the stadium tower. Students literally live inside the structure you're sitting in front of. It's the most unique architectural quirk in FBS football and worth a moment of appreciation before kickoff.
