For Iraqi passport holders, a trip to watch live sport in the United States begins with the visa, and it is the part that needs the most lead time. This guide sets out the process and the realistic timelines rather than glossing them, and it is written as much for the Iraqi diaspora in Europe and North America — who can travel far more easily — as for anyone applying from Iraq.
Beyond the paperwork it covers the practical side: routes and connections, halal food near the big stadiums, getting around car-dependent US cities, and what to expect on a game day.
Which Sport to Go and See
The United States runs five major spectator sports, and which one you can see depends entirely on when you visit.
- College football (late August to early January) is the one most visitors underestimate. Crowds of 100,000 are normal at the biggest programmes, the atmosphere is closer to a derby than anything in US pro sport, and tickets are cheap by comparison.
- NFL (September to February) is the hardest ticket and the biggest occasion. Only nine home games a season, so plan around a specific team's schedule.
- MLB (April to October) is the easiest to see on short notice — 81 home games a season means tickets are cheap and available almost any day of the week in summer.
- NBA and NHL (October to June) are indoor, weatherproof, and the best option for a winter trip. Many arenas host both.
If you are building a trip around it, our schedule pages show every away game for a given team with flights, hotels and tickets for those dates, and the stadium guides cover getting in, where to sit, and what you cannot bring through the gate.
Entry Requirements
This is the most important section. Read it carefully and act immediately if you haven't already.
Iraqi citizens are not eligible for ESTA (the Electronic System for Travel Authorization). Iraq is not part of the US Visa Waiver Program. You need a B1/B2 nonimmigrant visa to enter the USA. Both processes are difficult and slow for Iraqi passport holders. Start immediately if you haven't already.
IMPORTANT: Iraq is NOT on the US travel ban list (unlike Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen). Iraqi citizens can apply for and receive US tourist visas. However, processing times are very long and approval rates are lower than average. Do not delay.
US Visa (B1/B2)
The process:
- Complete the DS-160 online application form at ceac.state.gov
- Pay the visa application fee ($185 USD)
- Schedule an interview at the US Embassy in Baghdad or the US Consulate in Erbil
- Attend the interview with your passport (valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates), DS-160 confirmation, photo, and supporting documents showing ties to Iraq (employment letter, property records, bank statements, family ties)
- If approved, your passport with the visa is returned within a few business days to several weeks
Critical: check wait times now. Interview wait times at the US Embassy in Baghdad and Consulate in Erbil can be extremely long. If you do not already have a valid US visa, time may already be short.
Alternative embassy options: Many Iraqi applicants apply at US embassies in neighboring countries where they can establish legal presence. The US Embassy in Amman (Jordan), Ankara (Turkey), Abu Dhabi (UAE), or Dubai are common alternatives. Wait times vary. Check ustraveldocs.com for the specific embassy you plan to use.
If you already have a valid B1/B2 visa: You're set. Check that it hasn't expired and that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond June 2026.
Canadian Visa (TRV)
Iraqi citizens require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada. Apply online through IRCC or at a Canadian visa office.
You will need:
- Valid passport
- Completed application forms
- Proof of financial means
- Travel itinerary (hotel booking, match ticket)
- Ties to your home country (employment, property, family)
Processing times for Iraqi applicants can be several weeks to months. Apply as early as possible. If you hold a valid US visa, some Canadian visa offices process applications faster, as US visa approval is considered a positive signal.
For Iraqis with dual nationality
If you hold a European passport from a Visa Waiver Program country (e.g., Sweden, Netherlands, Germany — common among the Iraqi diaspora in Europe), you can enter the US with an ESTA ($40.27 USD, apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov). Most European passport holders can also enter Canada with an eTA ($7 CAD) rather than a full visa. If you hold only an Iraqi passport with European residency, you still need both visas. European residency does not change your entry requirements.
For the Iraqi diaspora in the US
If you are an Iraqi-American citizen, US permanent resident, or hold a valid US visa, entry to the US is straightforward. ca/).
Getting There
From Iraq: There are no direct flights from Baghdad (BGW) or Erbil (EBL) to any US or Canadian city. All routes require at least one connection. Plan for 18-28+ hours of total travel time.
Best routing options:
- Via Istanbul (IST): Turkish Airlines flies from both Baghdad and Erbil to Istanbul, with excellent connections to Boston (BOS), Philadelphia (PHL), and Toronto (YYZ). This is likely the most practical routing with the best schedules and prices.
- Via Doha (DOH): Qatar Airways flies Baghdad and Erbil to Doha, with connections to US and Canadian cities. Less direct than Istanbul for the northeastern US cities on Iraq's schedule, but competitive on price.
- Via Amman (AMM): Royal Jordanian flies Baghdad to Amman. From Amman, Royal Jordanian serves New York (JFK) and Chicago (ORD), from where you can connect to Boston. This routing adds a stop but may offer good fares.
- Via Dubai (DXB): Emirates flies from Erbil and Baghdad to Dubai, with connections to US cities (JFK, BOS via codeshare). Toronto is served via New York connections.
This avoids backtracking. Istanbul to Toronto is a direct route on Turkish Airlines.
Gillette Stadium is 35 miles southwest of Boston. Lincoln Financial Field is 8 miles from the airport. BMO Field is downtown, about 25 km from the airport.
Book as early as possible. Fares purchased now are likely to be significantly cheaper than last-minute prices.

Getting Around
Foxborough / Boston: Gillette Stadium is in Foxborough, Massachusetts, about 35 miles southwest of Boston. On event days, the MBTA runs commuter rail service from Boston's South Station to Foxborough — this is the best option and avoids parking chaos. The train takes about an hour. Outside of event days, there is no regular transit to Foxborough, and the area is suburban. Uber and Lyft are available but expect surge pricing after the game. If traveling from your hotel in Boston, the commuter rail is strongly recommended.
Within Boston, the MBTA subway (the "T") covers the city well. The Red, Green, Blue, and Orange lines connect most neighborhoods. Logan Airport is accessible via the Blue Line and Silver Line.
Philadelphia: Lincoln Financial Field is in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, about 5 miles south of Center City. SEPTA's Broad Street Line (subway) runs to NRG station (formerly AT&T station), a short walk from the stadium. On game days, SEPTA runs additional service. From Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), SEPTA's Airport Line connects to Center City in about 25 minutes, then transfer to the Broad Street Line. The stadium area is well-served by transit.
Within Philadelphia, SEPTA buses, subway, and trolleys cover the city. The historic center is very walkable. Uber and Lyft work well.
Toronto: BMO Field is at Exhibition Place on the Toronto waterfront, well-served by public transit. The TTC 509 Harbourfront and 511 Bathurst streetcar lines stop at Exhibition Place. From Union Station (downtown), it's about 15 minutes by streetcar. From Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ), take the UP Express train to Union Station (28 minutes, $12.35 CAD) and connect to the streetcar. Toronto has an excellent transit system and the downtown is walkable.
Between cities: Boston to Philadelphia is a 5-hour drive, a 5-hour Amtrak ride, or a 90-minute flight. Amtrak's Northeast Regional or Acela runs this route frequently and is comfortable. Philadelphia to Toronto is a 90-minute flight (multiple daily on Air Canada and United) or a very long drive (8+ hours). Fly this leg.
Driving: An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended alongside your Iraqi driving licence in both the US and Canada. You drive on the right in both countries. For the northeastern US route, driving is feasible but parking at stadiums is expensive and traffic on game days is heavy. Transit is generally the better option.
Money, Phones, and Essentials
Currency: US Dollar in Boston/Foxborough and Philadelphia. Canadian Dollar in Toronto (as of early 2026, roughly $1 USD = $1.42 CAD). Contactless payments work almost everywhere in both countries. A multi-currency card (Wise, Revolut) avoids double conversion fees. ATMs are widely available.
Sales tax: Prices in the US and Canada do not include tax. In Massachusetts (Foxborough), sales tax is 6.25% (no tax on clothing under $175). In Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), it's about 8%. In Ontario (Toronto), HST is 13%. Budget accordingly.
Tipping: Mandatory in both the US and Canada. At restaurants, tip 18-20% of the bill. At bars, $1-2 per drink. For Uber/Lyft rides, 15-20%. Not tipping is considered extremely rude in both countries. Budget for it on top of tax.
Phone: Pick up a prepaid US SIM at the airport or a T-Mobile store ($30-40 USD). T-Mobile includes Canada roaming on most plans, which covers the Toronto leg. eSIM services like Airalo work in both countries and can be set up before you leave Iraq.
Plugs: The US and Canada both use Type A/B plugs (two flat pins), 120V. Iraqi plugs (Type C/G, 230V) will not fit without an adapter. Bring one. Most phone and laptop chargers auto-switch voltage.
Language: English is the primary language in all three cities. Arabic speakers have a significant presence in the broader region — see the diaspora section below. Stadium staff, transit, and restaurants operate in English. Toronto is bilingual (English/French) at the federal level, but English dominates daily life. Download Google Translate's offline English pack if needed.
Healthcare: There is no public healthcare for visitors in the US. An emergency room visit can cost thousands of dollars. Canada has universal healthcare for residents, but visitors are not covered. Buy travel insurance before you go. This is not optional.
Halal Food Guide
Foxborough / Boston
Near Gillette Stadium: Foxborough itself has very limited halal options.
Boston: Excellent halal dining. Key areas:
- Allston / Brighton: Home to a large Arab and Muslim community. Shawarma Falafel (Allston), Rami's (Brookline, just south), and numerous kebab shops along Harvard Avenue and Brighton Avenue
- Cambridge: Moona (Mediterranean), multiple halal-friendly restaurants along Massachusetts Avenue near MIT and Harvard
- Roxbury / Dorchester: The Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center (the largest mosque in New England) is in Roxbury. Surrounding streets have halal grocery stores and restaurants
- Downtown: The Halal Guys (multiple locations), Paramount (Middle Eastern, multiple locations)
Halal grocery stores: Several in Allston, Cambridge, and Roxbury for self-catering.
Philadelphia
Near Lincoln Financial Field: Limited halal within walking distance of the stadium. The South Philadelphia Sports Complex is in a residential area. Eat before traveling to the stadium or rely on stadium concessions.
Philadelphia: Outstanding halal food — one of the best cities in the US for Muslim travelers.
- West Philadelphia / University City: Large Muslim community. Saad's Halal Restaurant (34th & Walnut), Al-Aqsa Restaurant (42nd & Chestnut), International Grill (Lancaster Ave) — all Zabiha halal
- Center City: The Halal Guys (multiple locations), Byblos (Lebanese), numerous halal food trucks along Market Street and around City Hall. Philadelphia's halal food cart culture is one of the strongest in the US — street carts serving chicken-and-rice plates for $7-10 are everywhere
- Northeast Philadelphia: The largest concentration of Arab and Muslim businesses. Al Sham (Palestinian/Syrian), Oasis Café, and dozens of halal restaurants along Bustleton Avenue, Castor Avenue, and in the Oxford Circle area
- South Philadelphia: The Italian Market area on 9th Street has Middle Eastern grocers alongside the Italian shops
Philadelphia is one of the best halal food cities in America. You will not struggle here.
Toronto
Near BMO Field: Limited options in the immediate Exhibition Place area, but downtown Toronto is a short streetcar ride away.
Toronto: Possibly the best halal food city in North America. Toronto's enormous Muslim population means halal is mainstream.
- Scarborough / East Toronto: The heart of halal Toronto. Nasib's, Lazeez Shawarma (chain), Afghan Kebab — massive concentration of halal restaurants from every cuisine imaginable (Somali, Afghan, Pakistani, Arab, Turkish, Malaysian)
- Thorncliffe Park / Flemingdon Park: Called "Little Arabia" by some — dense with halal restaurants, bakeries, and grocery stores. Lahore Tikka House is legendary
- Downtown / Dundas Street: Paramount Fine Foods (Lebanese chain, multiple locations, all halal), The Halal Guys, Ali Baba's (Middle Eastern, multiple locations)
- Kensington Market: Eclectic food market area with halal options mixed in among the global food vendors
Key advantage in Toronto: Many mainstream restaurants and fast food chains in Toronto offer halal-certified meat as standard. Check menus or ask — you will be pleasantly surprised.
Halal grocery stores: Available in every neighborhood in all three cities. Look for international/Middle Eastern grocery stores for Iraqi-specific products (tea, spices, bread). Toronto's selection is the best.
General tips
- Download the Zabihah app — the largest halal restaurant directory in North America. Covers all three cities thoroughly.
- Muslim Pro app provides prayer times and mosque locations for all three cities.
- When in doubt at restaurants, fish and seafood are always halal. Vegetarian options are widely available everywhere.
Food and Drink Costs
USA (Boston + Philadelphia)
- Coffee: $5-8 USD
- Casual lunch (fast-casual, food truck, halal cart): $12-20 USD
- Sit-down dinner (no drinks): $30-55 USD
- Dinner with drinks: $50-80 USD
- Beer at a bar: $8-12 USD
- Grocery run for a day: $20-30 USD
Boston is one of the more expensive food cities in the US. Philadelphia is more affordable, with a strong street food culture that keeps casual dining costs down.
Canada (Toronto)
- Coffee: $4-7 CAD ($3-5 USD)
- Casual lunch (fast-casual): $15-22 CAD ($11-16 USD)
- Sit-down dinner (no drinks): $35-55 CAD ($25-39 USD)
- Dinner with drinks: $60-90 CAD ($43-64 USD)
- Beer at a bar: $9-14 CAD ($6-10 USD)
Toronto prices are comparable to US cities but paid in Canadian dollars, which softens costs slightly. Budget $50-70 USD per day for food across all three cities if you mix casual and sit-down meals.
Prayer Spaces
Boston: Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center (Roxbury) is the largest mosque in New England. Dozens of smaller mosques throughout the metro area. Use Muslim Pro for locations and prayer times.
Philadelphia: Masjid Al-Jamia (North Philadelphia), Masjid Muhammad (West Philadelphia), and many others. Philadelphia has one of the oldest Muslim communities in the US.
Toronto: Over 80 mosques across the Greater Toronto Area. The Islamic Foundation of Toronto (Scarborough) and Masjid Toronto (downtown) are two of the largest. Many malls and public buildings in Toronto have dedicated prayer rooms.
Weather
Foxborough / Boston: Pleasant. Mid-June in New England means 22-28 C with moderate humidity. Evenings cool to 16-20 C. Bring a light layer for after the game. Compared to Iraqi summers, this will feel cool.
Philadelphia: Warmer. Late June in Philadelphia means 28-33 C with humidity. Lincoln Financial Field is open-air, so bring sunscreen and water. By the second half, temperatures will begin cooling. Still much milder than an Iraqi summer.
Toronto: Moderate. Late June in Toronto means 23-28 C. Toronto summers are pleasant. You will not need air conditioning to survive, unlike Baghdad.
Fan Culture
** The 1986 squad in Mexico is a proud chapter in Iraqi football history, and the 2007 Asian Cup triumph (won during wartime, one of the most emotional moments in sports history) showed the world what Iraqi football means to its people. Every match in 2026 carries that weight. Iraqi fans are passionate, loud, and unified in a way that few fanbases can match.
Gillette Stadium and Lincoln Financial Field both have deep tailgating culture from NFL football. Bring your flags, drums, and chants. BMO Field in Toronto has a smaller footprint without NFL-style tailgating, but the pre-match atmosphere around Exhibition Place will be lively.
Stadium rules: Bag policies are strict at US stadiums. Most enforce a clear bag policy: only transparent bags smaller than 12"x6"x12" are allowed. Leave your regular bag at the hotel. You can buy a clear bag cheaply at any Target or Walmart. No pyrotechnics, no smoke bombs, no flares. BMO Field in Toronto has similar restrictions.
The Norway and Senegal games are where Iraqi fans have the best chance of creating a home atmosphere. Make your section count. The 2007 Asian Cup energy — bring that.
Time Zones
Iraq uses Arabia Standard Time (AST, UTC+3) year-round. The US East Coast is on Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC-4) during summer, so Boston, Philadelphia, and Toronto are 7 hours behind Iraq.
| Match | Local Time | AST (UTC+3) |
|---|---|---|
| Iraq vs Norway (Foxborough, ET) | Tue 16 Jun, 6:00 PM | Wed 17 Jun, 1:00 AM |
| France vs Iraq (Philadelphia, ET) | Mon 22 Jun, 5:00 PM | Tue 23 Jun, 12:00 AM |
| Senegal vs Iraq (Toronto, ET) | Fri 26 Jun, 3:00 PM | 10:00 PM |
The Friday night timing could not be better for watch parties across Iraq.
For you in North America: All three games are afternoon or early evening kickoffs. Your mornings are free for exploring. The 7-hour time difference is manageable. Jet lag heading west (which stretches your day longer) is generally easier than heading east. Give yourself at least two days to adjust after arriving.
