Iowa City on a fall Saturday morning is a particular kind of place — 70,000 people descending on a college town of 75,000, the smell of tailgate smoke drifting across Melrose Avenue, everyone wearing black and gold. Kinnick Stadium is not a flashy modern building; it's a brick-and-limestone bowl that has been wedged into the west side of the University of Iowa campus since 1929, renovated enough to feel current but never sanitized of its character. As an away fan, you'll be surrounded. This crowd is loud, knowledgeable, and uncompromising — but if you're there for the football, you'll respect the place, even if it's rough going.

What a Trip Here Costs, in Numbers

College football tickets on Vivid Seats are listed for all 3 upcoming games, starting at $44 (Purdue Boilermakers, Nov 14); the priciest game to get into starts at $92 (Wisconsin Badgers, Oct 31).

A 3-star or better hotel within 15 miles of the stadium runs from $102 a night, based on 17 hotels.

The airport for this trip is Des Moines International (DSM), 109 miles from the stadium.

The next 12 months bring 3 visiting teams, all of them based within 300 miles. The longest trip: Nebraska Cornhuskers, 270 miles each way.

Ticket prices checked Oct 3; hotel rates checked Oct 2.

Ticket figures are each game's lowest listed price with estimated fees added. The hotel figure is the 25th-percentile nightly rate of the hotels sampled. Distances are straight-line, stadium to airport and stadium to stadium.

How to Get to Kinnick Stadium (Shuttle, Driving, Rideshare)

The recommended gateway is Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids (CID), about 25 miles from campus. The drive from CID to Kinnick is approximately 25 minutes under normal traffic conditions. There is no direct bus service from the airport to Iowa City, so rent a car or book a rideshare in advance — CID is a small regional airport, and transportation is not always immediately available, especially if your flight arrives late at night.

Once you're in Iowa City, driving is the default for most visitors, but the free CAMBUS shuttle system is genuinely useful if you're parking in the outer lots. CAMBUS provides shuttle services from select parking lots to near Kinnick Stadium on home football game days, with extra shuttle service beginning two hours before kickoff and frequent runs until kickoff. The drop-off and pickup hub is the VA Loop on Newton Road, north of the stadium. The 31 Red Route and 32 Blue Route are the modified game-day services, running detours from the start of service until about two hours after the game ends. CAMBUS is a zero-fare service open to the general public , so there's no fare to worry about. For Uber/Lyft, request your ride at least a half mile from the stadium — surge pricing kicks in immediately post-game within the immediate stadium zone.

Transit (CAMBUS): Shuttle service decreases during the game but ramp up again approximately halfway through the fourth quarter. Post-game shuttle service is provided for approximately one hour post-game. The VA Loop on Newton Road is your pickup point. Wait 15–20 minutes after the final whistle before heading to the shuttle — the first wave of people will be standing three deep at the stop. The 31 Red and 32 Blue routes are your targets.

Driving: Hawkins Drive reopens roughly two hours after the game ends. The fastest post-game exit if you're heading to I-80: fans can access I-80 from Kinnick-area lots by continuing straight through the Hawkins Drive/Highway 6 intersection onto Rocky Shore Drive/Park Road, which connects to Dubuque Street northbound about one mile to I-80. Alternatively, access I-80 from Highway 6 via Coral Ridge Avenue. Realistically, budget 45–60 minutes to reach moving highway traffic after a noon or afternoon game. Night games are slightly faster because some fans leave early.

Rideshare: Surge pricing hits immediately after the final whistle within the immediate stadium zone. Walk at least 10–12 minutes toward downtown (east toward Clinton Street) before requesting your Uber or Lyft — you'll drop the surge by a full multiplier and cut wait time in half. Best timing for rideshare: wait 20 minutes post-game, walk toward downtown, then request.

One tip to beat the crowd: Leave with about four minutes on the clock in the fourth quarter if the game is decided. You'll exit Hawkins Drive before the closure tightens and be on I-80 before 95% of the crowd has left their seats.

Nebraska Cornhuskers, Purdue Boilermakers, and Wisconsin Badgers are all heading to Kinnick Stadium this season. Plan your away trip:

Tailgating and Parking at Kinnick Stadium

Iowa City is a college town with limited flat land, so parking fills up fast and road closures start early. Public parking spaces open six hours before kickoff but no earlier than 6 a.m. The most important thing to know: lots adjacent to the stadium require a prepaid pass purchased in advance. Paid lots including the softball lot, Finkbine golf course lot, the lower Finkbine lot, Newton ramp, ramp 4, and lots 3, 11, and 65 cost $30 for cars and $100 for RVs. Season-long and single-game public parking passes can be purchased in advance prior to noon CT the day before each game, subject to availability.

The budget play: free parking and CAMBUS shuttle service is available in the Hancher Auditorium (Lot 55), Hawkeye Commuter (Lot 85), and Hall of Fame (Lot 71) lots. These outer lots are walkable to the shuttle and save you real money, but plan for a 20–30 minute shuttle ride each way. Arrive at least 2.5 hours before kickoff if you want a spot in the paid lots closest to the stadium — they're gone by then for marquee games. Also note: Hawkins Drive, directly east of Kinnick Stadium, is closed to non-emergency vehicular traffic two and a half hours prior to kickoff until two hours post-game.

Where to Stay Near Kinnick Stadium

Downtown Iowa City is your best base — it's about a 20-minute walk or a very short Uber from the stadium, it has actual bars and restaurants worth eating at, and you don't have to deal with residential street parking chaos. The strip along Clinton Street and Dubuque Street is the heart of it. Graduate by Hilton Iowa City is situated about 0.9 miles from Kinnick Stadium, designed with a nod to local university culture and appeals to families and travelers alike. It's the most obvious choice and prices spike on game weekends — book months out. Budget travelers will find chain options (Marriott, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton) clustered along Highway 6 and near Coralville, just west of campus, at more reasonable rates. Coralville is only a 10–15 minute drive to the stadium and has decent chain hotel inventory even late in the booking window.

Where to Eat and Drink at Kinnick Stadium

Pullman Bar & Diner (on Washington Street downtown) is the well-traveled fan's first stop. The food is genuinely good — creative American diner fare with a solid bar — and it handles game-day crowds without completely losing its mind. Get there early for a proper pre-game meal.

Hamburg Inn No. 2 is the kind of place that ends up on lists of iconic American diners for a reason. The Hamburg Inn serves classic meals and their must-try pie shakes. It's a bit of a walk from the stadium, but if you're in Iowa City, it would be a genuine waste not to go.

Stella on Melrose Avenue earns its reputation as the closest legitimate option to the stadium. Stella sits along Melrose Avenue in the shadows of Kinnick, featuring burgers named for Iowa towns and chicken sandwiches named for Iowa counties, plus a healthy selection of local and craft beers. It gets loud and packed, but it's the natural gathering spot if you want to be in the middle of the pregame energy.

Mickey's Irish Pub on Linn Street is the dive bar option — no pretense, a four-decade Iowa City staple with the look of an old-school Irish pub, dark wood paneling, dim lighting, and a neon Guinness sign. The Bruce Hornsby burger is the thing to order.

Once inside Kinnick Stadium, fans will find plenty of options to keep the party going.

All concession stands are cashless — only credit or debit cards accepted — with twenty concession stands located throughout the concourse and additional vendors open in Krause Family Plaza near Gate A. Expect to pay around $9–12 for a domestic beer and $10–14 for a basic food item like a hot dog or nachos (standard Big Ten pricing). Outside food and beverages are not allowed inside Kinnick Stadium , so plan accordingly. Free hydration stations are located at Sections 102 and 120, plus water fountains throughout the concourse — bring an empty refillable bottle if you want to save some money.

Kinnick Stadium Bag Policy, Gates, and Game Day Tips

Only clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags no larger than 12"×6"×12" are permitted, plus small clutch purses no larger than 4.5"×6.5". Purses, handbags, backpacks, and cinch bags will NOT be permitted. Starting in 2024, the process got notably smoother: all gates are equipped with walk-through metal detectors, and fans do not need to empty their pockets or belongings unless instructed by stadium security. Kinnick Stadium gates open 90 minutes prior to kickoff. Entry into Kinnick Stadium is allowed only via Gates A, B, H, I, and M.

One practical tip: if you've got a bag that doesn't meet the clear bag requirement, there's a free bag drop-off available. A complimentary bag drop-off inside the Indoor Track Facility is available to secure prohibited items, starting two hours before kickoff and closing one hour after the game ends. There is a strict no re-entry policy — once you exit the stadium, you will not be permitted to re-enter , with the sole exception of the Krause Family Plaza at Gate A during halftime.

Kinnick Stadium Accessibility: ADA Seating, Elevators, and Accessible Entry

To access ADA-accessible seats in the north end zone, use the two street-level entrances with elevators located off Evashevski Drive on the north side of the stadium. All other accessible seats are on the concourse level and are accessible from any gate. Assisted Listening Devices are available for check-out at Guest Services in the south concourse, near Section 213. Closed captioning is available on the video boards at both the north and south ends of the stadium.

On the sensory side, Iowa Athletics is working toward KultureCity certification. Sensory bags are available for checkout at Guest Services locations at each of the four corners of the concourse, providing gadgets and tools to help individuals regulate sensory experiences. Day-of-game ADA parking is available in Hawkeye Ramp and Lot 43N for a fee of $40, and vehicles must display a state-issued ADA placard or license plate.

Kinnick Stadium Away Fan Guide: Seating, Atmosphere, and What to Expect

There is no formally designated away fan section at Kinnick — away tickets are spread throughout the stadium, though visiting fans with tickets through their school's athletic department sometimes cluster in the upper south end zone. If you're buying on the secondary market, sections 101–116 (lower bowl, east side) offer solid sightlines and good sight angles if you don't mind being low. The upper deck, sections 201–221, gives you the best view of the full field, particularly for watching offensive schemes develop — and frankly the crowd around you is slightly less intense up there.

Avoid the north end zone lower sections (127–130) if you care about sight lines — the steep rake makes for a disorienting angle during action near the south goal line. The west sideline (press box side) sections 213–222 are the premium rows, and you'll be surrounded by the loudest, most organized Iowa fans. Sightlines throughout Kinnick are genuinely good — the stadium was built on a site excavated some thirty feet below the surrounding street level , which means the bowl effect is dramatic and sound doesn't escape easily.

Away fans venturing into Kinnick should prepare for a passionate, loud, and overwhelmingly gold sea of Iowa faithful.

Kinnick is not a hostile crowd in the parking lot or on the walk in — Iowa fans are generally midwestern-polite until the ball is in play. Inside the bowl, though, it gets loud in a way that's hard to prepare for. The stadium is sunken into the ground and the sound recirculates rather than escaping upward, which makes it one of the more intimidating environments in the Big Ten even at two-thirds capacity. One thing that catches away fans off guard: the first-quarter wave. Kinnick features the "Kinnick Wave," where fans and players wave to the children at the nearby University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, visible beyond the north end zone. The entire stadium turns and waves toward the hospital at the end of the first quarter. It's genuinely moving, and you'll likely find yourself waving too whether you meant to or not. Don't be embarrassed. Also worth knowing: the visiting team's locker rooms are famously painted entirely pink, a tradition started by former coach Hayden Fry who believed pink would put opponents in a passive mood. Whether it works or not, it's the most Iowa thing imaginable.

Kinnick Stadium FAQ

What's the best airport to fly into for Kinnick Stadium?

What is Kinnick Stadium's bag policy?

You may bring a clear bag no larger than 12"×6"×12" or a one-gallon freezer bag (Ziploc or similar). Clutch bags no larger than 4.5"×6.5" are also allowed. No backpacks, purses, or non-clear bags of any kind.

Do I need to take my phone and keys out at the metal detector? No. You can walk right through the detectors without taking out your keys, phone, or wallet, and keep everything in your clear bag as you walk through.

How much does parking cost at Kinnick Stadium?

Paid lots (including Finkbine, Newton ramp, ramp 4, and lots 3, 11, and 65) cost $30 for cars. Free parking with a CAMBUS shuttle is available at the Hancher Auditorium (Lot 55), Hawkeye Commuter (Lot 85), and Hall of Fame (Lot 71) lots.

When do gates open at Kinnick Stadium?

Gates open 90 minutes prior to kickoff. Premium club doors open two hours before kickoff.

Are there cash transactions at Kinnick Stadium?

No — all concession stands are cashless, and only credit or debit cards are accepted. Have your card or phone pay ready.

Where's the best place to sit as an away fan? Upper deck sections in the 200s give you a clear sightline and slightly calmer surroundings. The lower south end zone is the most common place visiting fans cluster when purchasing through the visiting school's ticket office. Avoid the lower north end zone for angle issues. Sections 201–210 on the east upper deck are an honest away-fan sweet spot.

Is there a bag drop for prohibited bags? Yes. A complimentary bag drop-off inside the Indoor Track Facility is available, starting two hours before kickoff and closing one hour after the game ends. Enter through the lower southeast doors off Lot 43N Drive.
