Portman Road: Guide for Visiting Fans

Portman Road is a proper old English football ground — tight, atmospheric, built right into the fabric of the town with no buffer zone of car parks or corporate plazas between it and the streets of Ipswich. The Tractor Boys' return to the Premier League after 22 years away has supercharged the place, and as an away fan you'll notice it immediately: this crowd wants it badly and they're not shy about letting you know.

Getting There

The train is your best option, and it's almost embarrassingly easy. Ipswich railway station is less than half a mile from the ground, with a walking time of around eight to ten minutes. Upon arrival, come out onto Princes Street, cross the bridge, and follow it all the way up — the stadium will be on your left. There's a frequent service to London Liverpool Street, with trains departing roughly every 15 minutes during peak times. From Liverpool Street, you're looking at around an hour to an hour and ten minutes. If you're flying in, London Stansted is your closest airport — budget around an hour by road, or closer to two hours via a train-to-train connection through Liverpool Street. Cambridge is a reasonable staging post if you're driving from the Midlands or the North. Once you reach the A12/A14 Copdock interchange, it's around a 15-minute drive to the stadium — follow the A1214 London Road for a couple of miles until you reach the town centre. Rideshare drop-offs work fine on Sir Alf Ramsey Way, just south of the ground.

Parking

Don't plan on parking right outside. There are no official stadium car parks, and most nearby streets have controlled, residents-only parking — don't even try it. The closest option is a large pay-and-display car park on Portman Road itself (IP1 2BP), right next to the away end, but note that entry and exit are closed from 15 minutes before kick-off until 15 minutes after full-time. That's a real gotcha if you're planning a quick getaway. The car park takes approximately one hour to clear post-match, so factor that in. Alternative large car parks are available on West End Road (IP1 2DZ, about 5 minutes on foot) and at the railway station (IP2 8AL, about 10 minutes on foot). Ipswich Borough Council has introduced event-day pricing in the long-stay car parks adjacent to the stadium — expect a £15 charge from three hours before kick-off to one hour after. Arrive at least 90 minutes early if you want the closer spots; the West End Road car park is the smarter fallback.

Where to Stay

Book in the town centre or near the station — you won't need a car and you'll have options in every direction. There's a cluster of four or five hotels near Ipswich station, less than 10 minutes from Portman Road, including the Ramada Encore and the Riverside Hotel. The station cluster is the sweet spot: walkable to the ground, walkable to the waterfront bars, and generally mid-range in price. A Travelodge has also appeared right next to the stadium itself, adjacent to the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand — cheap and convenient if you just want somewhere to drop a bag before kick-off. The Ipswich Waterfront is a short distance away and has several popular restaurants, cafes, and bars overlooking the marina — worth choosing a hotel within walking distance if you want a decent evening the night before.

Before the Game

Your options as an away fan are somewhat curated by the geography of pub loyalty, so plan ahead.

The Riverside Hotel — This is the primary pre-match destination for away supporters. It's right by the station, and from there it's a short five-minute walk to Portman Road along Sir Alf Ramsey Way. It's nothing glamorous, but it's reliable, welcoming, and well-placed.

The Punch and Judy (Cardinal Park) — A more family-friendly option, also suitable for both sets of fans. Located on Grafton Way, with Nando's, McDonald's, and other food options nearby if you want something to eat before heading in.

Trongs — One of Ipswich's top-rated restaurants, sitting just 0.3 miles from the stadium on St. Nicholas Street. This is a long-standing Chinese restaurant with a strong local reputation — ideal if you want a proper sit-down meal before the match rather than a rushed pint.

Zaika — Also on St. Nicholas Street, 0.3 miles from the ground, with consistently strong reviews for Indian cuisine. Book ahead for a weekend fixture — it fills up.

Game Day Tips

Visiting fans are strongly encouraged to use the designated away pub, as most pubs around the ground are for home fans only — and few pubs in the town, if any, will welcome large groups of away fans. Don't wander into a boozer in club colours and expect a warm reception. The entrances to the away end — blocks VU1, VU2, VU3, VL, and VA of the Cobbold Stand — are on Portman Road, next to the away ticket collection windows. Expect to be searched on entry; the club uses a trained K9 unit, and some stewards and police officers wear body cameras on matchdays. Arrive in plenty of time to allow searches and a steady flow through to the turnstiles. Gates open roughly two hours before kick-off. Bags are checked, so keep it simple.

For Away Fans

Ipswich fans have made Portman Road a noisy place to visit, with supporters revelling in the club's newfound success. This isn't a passive crowd. The visitors' section is in the upper and lower tiers of the Cobbold Stand, and here's what the guides won't always tell you: pillars can cause restricted sightlines at the back of the stand, so try to get a seat further forward — and the legroom is genuinely cramped, making standing common, particularly for fans at the back of the upper tier. The cantilevered roof covers most of the stadium, but the Lower Tier of the Cobbold Stand is the exception — if you're down there on a wet Suffolk afternoon, you will get wet. The good news is that safe standing was installed in the Cobbold Stand ahead of the 2024-25 season, so visiting fans now have rail seating available in the upper tier. The atmosphere from the away end — when it's bouncing — carries well across the ground. Ipswich fans will hear you, and they'll respond. Come ready.
