Mexico Stadium Road Trip

Mexico City → Guadalajara → Monterrey: flights vs buses, altitude, where to stay, and how to build a road trip around Mexico's three biggest stadium cities.

Mexico's three biggest stadium cities are far enough apart that this is a fly-between trip rather than a drive, with the exception of the excellent long-distance buses. Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey each have serious football culture and very different characters.

Altitude is the thing most visitors underestimate — Mexico City sits at 2,240m and it will affect you.

Mexico City (Estadio Azteca)

Estadio Azteca is the most historic football stadium in the Western Hemisphere. Playing here is not just a match — it's a pilgrimage.

Getting there: Fly into Mexico City International Airport (MEX). The stadium is in the Coyoacan district, about 30 minutes from the historic center by Metro or Uber. Metro Line 2 (Blue) to Tasqueña, then the Tren Ligero to Estadio Azteca station drops you at the gates.

Where to stay: Roma Norte and Condesa are the best neighborhoods for visitors — walkable, full of restaurants and bars, and well-connected by Metro. Downtown (Centro Historico) is cheaper and puts you near the Zocalo and major museums. Search hotels in Mexico City.

Don't miss: Walking into the Azteca and looking up at 87,000 seats of pure football history. The tunnel entrance is narrow, the roar is deafening, and the altitude (7,200 ft) hits you the moment you start climbing stairs.

Guadalajara (Estadio Akron)

Estadio Akron is the home of Chivas de Guadalajara, one of Mexico's most popular clubs. The stadium is modern, located in the suburb of Zapopan, about 30 minutes northwest of the city center. It seats 49,000 and has excellent sightlines.

Getting there from Mexico City: Fly MEX to GDL (75 minutes, frequent departures, $40-80 one-way). Bus is an option — primera clase services (ETN, Primera Plus) run the 330-mile route in about 6 hours for $30-50. The bus stations are modern and comfortable. Search flights to Guadalajara.

Where to stay: Centro Historico or Chapultepec neighborhood for walkability and nightlife. Zapopan is closer to the stadium but less interesting for visitors. Search hotels in Guadalajara.

Don't miss: Tlaquepaque, a colonial-era arts district 20 minutes from downtown. It's one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in Mexico, and the restaurants serve some of the best birria in the country.

Monterrey (Estadio BBVA)

F. Monterrey (Rayados) and one of the most impressive modern stadiums in Latin America. It seats 51,000 and opened in 2015.

Getting there from Guadalajara: Fly GDL to MTY (2 hours). The bus is possible but long — about 9-10 hours and 630 miles. Flying is strongly recommended. Search flights to Monterrey.

Getting there from Mexico City: Fly MEX to MTY (1.5 hours, frequent, $50-100). Bus takes about 12 hours — not recommended unless you enjoy overnight travel. Search flights to Monterrey.

Where to stay: Barrio Antiguo (the old quarter) has the best nightlife and restaurants. San Pedro Garza Garcia is the upscale suburb with mountain views and modern hotels. Search hotels in Monterrey.

Don't miss: The view of Cerro de la Silla from inside the stadium at sunset. The Sierra Madre mountains frame the pitch in a way that no other stadiums can match.

Getting Between Cities

Leg Distance Best Option Time Cost
CDMX → Guadalajara 330 mi Flight (MEX→GDL) 75 min $40-80
Guadalajara → Monterrey 630 mi Flight (GDL→MTY) 2 hrs $50-100
CDMX → Monterrey 580 mi Flight (MEX→MTY) 1.5 hrs $50-100

Bus travel: Mexico's primera clase bus network is clean, comfortable, and cheap. CDMX to Guadalajara is a reasonable 6-hour ride. Guadalajara to Monterrey is too far by bus. CDMX to Monterrey is 12 hours — fly.

Driving: Possible but not recommended for tourists. Toll roads (autopistas) are well-maintained but expensive, and driving in Mexico City is genuinely stressful. Use Uber and domestic flights.

Currency: Mexican peso (MXN). Cards accepted in most restaurants and hotels in all three cities. Carry some cash for street food, taxis, and smaller vendors.
