Houston isn't a college football city the way Tuscaloosa or Columbus is — it's a sprawling, professional-sports-first town that only recently got serious about its state university. TDECU Stadium, which opened in 2014 and now hosts Big 12 competition on the University of Houston campus, is a compact, purpose-built, genuinely pleasant place to watch a game, though whether it fills up depends heavily on who's coming to town. For away fans, the vibe is usually manageable — you won't need to wear your team colors under a trench coat — but come for a marquee matchup and the Third Ward tailgates will remind you this is a real football school with a real football past.

What a Trip Here Costs, in Numbers

College football tickets on Vivid Seats are listed for all 3 upcoming games, starting at $28 (Cincinnati Bearcats, Nov 7); the priciest game to get into starts at $49 (Oklahoma State Cowboys, Oct 17).

A 3-star or better hotel within 15 miles of the stadium runs from $98 a night, based on 158 hotels.

The airport for this trip is William P. Hobby (HOU), 7 miles from the stadium.

The next 12 months bring 3 visiting teams, 1 of them based within 300 miles. The longest trip: Cincinnati Bearcats, 900 miles each way.

Ticket prices checked Oct 3; hotel rates checked Oct 2.

Ticket figures are each game's lowest listed price with estimated fees added. The hotel figure is the 25th-percentile nightly rate of the hotels sampled. Distances are straight-line, stadium to airport and stadium to stadium.

How to Get to TDECU Stadium (Metro, Driving, Rideshare)

The METRORail Purple Line conveniently stops near Gate 3 on the west end of TDECU Stadium. The station is called the TSU/UH Athletics District stop, and it's the Purple Line station directly near TDECU Stadium. From downtown, the Purple Line includes a stop just outside TDECU Stadium, running the 6.6-mile route that begins downtown and travels southeast along Capitol and Rusk. Fares are affordable at $1.25 per ride, with trains running as frequently as every six minutes during peak hours. For a game day, the UH athletics department itself recommends it: park in Downtown or East Downtown and take the Purple Line to the UH Athletics District stop, just steps from the stadium.

By car, the stadium is located between multiple roadways in a central area of Houston and within a mile of Interstate 45. From I-45 southbound, take the Scott Street exit and proceed southbound, turning left on Elgin for regular cash parking in Lot 16, or left on Holman for reserved and pre-paid parking in the Stadium Garage.

Flying in? Houston has two main airports. Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is roughly 25 miles north — budget 40–55 minutes by car depending on traffic. Hobby Airport (HOU) is only about 10 miles southeast and is typically a 20–25 minute drive, making it the strongly preferred option for a TDECU Stadium trip.

For rideshare, the designated rideshare pick-up and drop-off location on campus is in the corner of Elgin St. and Cullen Blvd., on the north side of campus by I-45.

By Light Rail: The Purple Line is your best post-game friend. Trains run continuously, and METRO typically adds frequency for major events — expect a wait of 5–15 minutes at the TSU/UH Athletics District station post-game. The line dumps you back into downtown in about 15 minutes. If you parked downtown or in EaDo before the game, this is essentially a stress-free exit. Tip: walk to the platform immediately after the final whistle — it fills up fast but clears fast too, with trains cycling every few minutes.

By Car: The lots adjacent to the stadium (especially the garage off Holman) can take 30–45 minutes to clear after a sold-out game. Lot 16 on Elgin, counterintuitively, sometimes clears faster because it exits in a different direction from the main stadium garage traffic flow. From northbound I-45, take the Elgin/Lockwood exit and remain straight on Elgin for Lot 16. If you can wait 25–30 minutes inside or at a concourse bar after the gun, the lot traffic drops dramatically.

By Rideshare: The designated rideshare pick-up and drop-off location is at the corner of Elgin St. and Cullen Blvd., on the north side of campus by I-45. Surge pricing after big games is real — it can spike 2–3x for 20–25 minutes. Best move: wait 20 minutes inside, walk out, and request when the surge indicator drops. Walking two blocks off-campus before requesting can also cut the price noticeably. Do not attempt a rideshare pickup at the main stadium entrance — it'll be chaos and the driver won't reach you.

One tip to beat the crowd: If you're riding the Purple Line, skip the main Gate 3 exit crush and walk around to the west side platform early. You'll board faster and stand rather than waiting in a crush for the next train.

Baylor Bears, Cincinnati Bearcats, and Oklahoma State Cowboys are all heading to TDECU Stadium this season. Plan your away trip:

TDECU Stadium Parking: Lots, Prices, and Best Options

There are a total of 3,735 parking spaces in the TDECU Stadium precinct. The breakdown: the TDECU Stadium parking garage holds 2,268 parking spaces, and there are 1,467 surface spots in the immediate vicinity. Beyond that, there are thousands of additional parking places in satellite lots and other parking garages around campus.

Game day parking opens four hours prior to kickoff. The Platinum and Red Lots (12A/12B) are the closest and priciest — reserved for Cougar Pride donors. For everyone else, the Stadium Garage off Holman is your best value for proximity, typically running $20–$30 pre-purchased online. Text-to-pay locations start at $30. Lot 16 off Elgin is the general cash/walk-up option and tends to be cheaper but fills from the outside in, so arrive early. All parking passes for recent seasons have been digital, delivered via email to your mobile device, so pre-purchase on UHCougars.com before you leave home — it's genuinely faster at the gate and often cheaper than day-of lots. For a big game, be in a lot by 90 minutes before kickoff or you'll be circling.

Where to Stay Near TDECU Stadium

Skip the airport-adjacent chains. For a game trip, the two neighborhoods worth booking are Midtown and Montrose, both about 2–4 miles from campus and easily a $10–12 rideshare each way.

Midtown sits right along the METRORail Red Line (connect to Purple at Central Station), has a strong nightlife strip on Gray Street, and offers a good mix of mid-range hotels — think Aloft, Courtyard, or Hampton Inn properties in the $120–$180/night range on game weekends. It's walkable, has plenty of bars and restaurants, and won't put you in game-day gridlock the morning after.

Montrose is Houston's artsy, eclectic neighborhood with better restaurant options than Midtown — if you want actual culinary exploration before or after the game, stay here. It skews slightly pricier on boutique options ($160–$220/night) but rewards you with better food and bar choices within walking distance of your hotel.

Downtown Houston hotels (Marriott Marquis, Hyatt Regency, etc.) are convenient for the Purple Line and good for business-class pricing ($180–$250/night game weekends), but the neighborhood goes quiet at night. If you want post-game bar action, you'll need a rideshare from downtown regardless.

Where to Eat and Drink at TDECU Stadium

The immediate surroundings of TDECU Stadium aren't exactly a restaurant row — this is a campus in the Third Ward, not a stadium district with a manufactured "fan zone" boulevard. But there are real places worth knowing:

Cream Burger — Down the street from TDECU Stadium and the go-to spot before kickoff, this Third Ward stand has been around since the '60s, serving burgers, chili-covered hot dogs, and milkshakes for single-digit prices. It's cash-only and tiny, but it's the most authentically Houston thing you can do near the stadium. Go early.

Rodeo Goat — A solid craft burger bar about a 10-minute rideshare away in the EaDo/Midtown area, with a rotating tap list and a genuinely good smash-style burger. Busy on game days but not impossible. Good for a pre-game beer without the tourist markup.

Nancy's Hustle — A bit further in Midtown, but if you're making a dinner of it, Nancy's is one of the most interesting spots in the city: a small, snappy American bistro with a smart wine list and cooking that punches above its weight. It shows up on Yelp's list of best restaurants near TDECU Stadium. Reservations strongly recommended on game nights.

What It Do BBQ — Houston takes BBQ seriously, and this Third Ward spot near campus consistently appears on local best-of lists. Perfect for pre-game; don't expect tablecloths or a hostess — do expect smoked meat that justifies the detour.

Once inside TDECU Stadium, fans will find plenty of options to keep the party going.

All concessions locations are cashless, so leave the cash in your pocket. New in 2025, Ninfa's, Halal Guys, Pizza Hut, and Layne's Chicken, among others, are served throughout TDECU Stadium — a genuine upgrade over the generic stadium fare of previous years. Beer, wine, and liquor are sold at select concession stands and portable stands throughout the concourse. Budget roughly $12–$14 for a domestic beer and $12–$16 for a full meal combo; Ninfa's (a Houston Tex-Mex institution) is the standout concession worth tracking down.

TDECU Stadium Bag Policy, Gates, and Game Day Tips

The UH Clear Bag Policy strictly limits the size and types of bags permitted into TDECU Stadium; backpacks, purses, and diaper bags are not permitted, but clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags not exceeding 12"×6"×12" are allowed. A one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc or similar) is also acceptable, as is a small clutch purse no larger than 4.5"×6.5". All patrons must pass through walk-through metal detectors at entry points.

Doors to TDECU Stadium typically open between 90 minutes and two hours before event time. The main fan activity zone — Cougar Alley — is on the east end. The pregame zone is located on the east and north end of TDECU Stadium, with easy access to Schroeder Gate 1, ICON Gate 2, and Gate 4, located on the northeast and southeast corners of the stadium. Away fans generally want to enter from the west or north side, away from the student section on the east end. The visitor locker room is on the west end, so visiting team fans tend to naturally cluster in the north upper deck sideline sections — ask at the ticket window which sections are available for single-game away purchasers.

One important note: glass containers are strictly prohibited, along with outside food or drink inside of TDECU Stadium. Don't try to bring in that Gatorade.

The University of Houston Department of Athletics is committed to guests with disabilities, and TDECU Stadium is designed with accessible parking, restrooms, concessions, ATMs, and seating areas. Accessible parking is available in all gameday parking lots and garages.

For vertical access inside the venue, spectators can use the elevator in the northeast corner by Schroeder Gate 1 and Section 133 to access the 200 and 300 level seating; additional elevators on the south side at the club level provide access to the suite level, press box level, and ADA access to the 300-level seating on the south side. There is also an additional ADA accessible elevator to get from the lower concourse to the upper concourse by ICON Gate 2. The Guest Services desk, where accessibility accommodations and assistive listening devices can be requested, is located at the northeast corner adjacent to Schroeder Gate 1 (behind section 136).

TDECU Stadium Away Fan Guide: Seating, Atmosphere, and What to Expect

There is no formally designated away section at TDECU Stadium — Houston doesn't assign a visiting fan block the way some programs do. In practice, away fans tend to disperse through the upper north sideline (Sections 220s–230s range) and parts of the end zones, which also tend to be cheaper. This actually works in your favor: you're less of a target, the sightlines from the upper bowl north side are clean, and you're close enough to the action without being surrounded by the loudest home sections, which cluster on the south sideline (press box side) and behind the home end zone.

Sections 101–108 and 121–128 wrap around the stadium providing good views, with center-field sections 104, 105, 124, and 125 considered premium in the 100 level. If you're buying for value, mid-tier upper-deck seats in the 200s on the north side give you a full-field view and easy concourse access. Avoid the very back rows of the east end zone upper deck — that's student section territory and you will not be among friends.

One genuine plus for any seat: TDECU Stadium was designed to showcase the Houston skyline in the northwest corner of the stadium. A gap in the upper levels of seating was left open in the northwest corner to highlight the skyline view — on a night game, you can see downtown Houston glittering over the open end. It's legitimately one of the better incidental views in college football.

Away fans should prepare for a passionate home crowd, but will find designated sections offering a comfortable experience.

Houston Cougar fans are genuinely passionate but not venomous — this isn't an SEC cauldron where opposing gear gets you harassed from the parking lot in. The crowd, when it shows up in numbers, focuses its energy on the game rather than on making your life difficult. That said, since joining the Big 12, the Cougars' move from the American Athletic Conference to the Big 12 in 2023 brought power-conference programs through TDECU Stadium each fall, pushing season ticket and single-game demand to new levels. The stadium atmosphere for marquee games has risen noticeably. One thing only someone who's been there will tell you: the open northwest corner isn't just an aesthetic quirk — it also means the wind off downtown Houston can make the north sideline upper deck genuinely cold on late-October night games, and surprisingly gusty. Bring a layer even when the weather app says it's 65°F.
