The 2026 College Football Travel Index

All 138 FBS programs ranked by how far they travel for away games this season.

  • 1,107,344total miles
  • 772road trips
  • 17×first vs last

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors will cover 37,232 round-trip miles to play 6 away games in 2026, more than any other FBS program and 17 times what Auburn Tigers face at the other end of the table (2,188). Across all 138 teams the season adds up to 1,107,344 miles over 772 trips.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors' position is geography and always has been. The change is what sits behind it: Stanford ranks 2nd at 21,758 miles and California 6th at 18,102. Both are now in the ACC, whose median is 8,586. Stanford travels 2.5 times the middle of its own conference, and its furthest league trip is 2,375 miles one-way to Duke Blue Devils. Realignment did not just stretch conferences across time zones; it left a handful of members carrying almost all of the cost.

That is not an artifact of playing more road games. Miles per trip strips schedule volume out, and by that measure the two are all but identical. Stanford averages 3,626 miles and California 3,620, 2nd and 3rd in the country. The 3,656-mile gap between their totals is almost exactly one average Stanford road trip, because California plays 5 road games to Stanford's 6. Every trip either of them makes is a continental crossing; the totals only made Stanford look like the outlier.

The gap between conferences is wider than the gap between most teams. Mountain West averages 14,789 miles per team against the SEC's 4,349 (3.4×), and the effect compounds at the extremes. 27 programs have no away game inside 300 miles all season, while Auburn Tigers are the only team in the country whose entire away schedule is drivable. The single longest trip belongs to Arizona State Sun Devils: 5,259 miles one-way to Wembley Stadium, London.

How these numbers are calculated

Distances are great-circle (straight-line) miles between stadium coordinates, not driving or flying distance. A road trip's real mileage is always higher; this measures the separation between two points, which is the part that can be computed consistently for every team. Every trip is counted as a round trip from the team's own stadium, so a 1,000-mile away game contributes 2,000 miles.

What counts as a trip: every 2026 regular-season game a team does not play at its own stadium. That includes the 11 games at a venue that is neither side's home ground; both teams travel to those, so each produces two trips. Arizona State Sun Devils' flight to London is the clearest example.

What does not count: 2 home games are moved to a different stadium inside the host's own metro, under 25 miles from its usual ground. The visitor still makes a trip; the host does not, because crossing town is not travel. That test is applied only to the host, never as a blanket distance floor: 11 genuine road games this season are under 40 miles, including rivalries a few miles apart, and all of them count. Excluded entirely: conference championship games and bowl/College Football Playoff games, because neither field is known in October and inventing a destination would be worse than omitting one.

Away-game counts are not equal: they range from 4 to 7 across FBS, because home and away splits are uneven and some programs buy an extra home game. Total mileage therefore reflects both distance and schedule volume, so miles per trip is given alongside it: it isolates how far a team's opponents are from how many times it leaves home. Sort by that column to compare geography directly.

"Drivable" means an away venue within 300 one-way miles. "Longest trip" is the one-way distance to the furthest away venue, so unlike the mileage totals it is not doubled for the return leg. "Toughest stretch" is the heaviest run of three consecutive away games by round-trip mileage; home games in between do not break the run.

Four teams have a projected, unconfirmed final opponent. The 2026 Pac-12 fills its final week with a flex format that is new this season: the first regular-season week a conference has left to be assigned late. The 4 hosts are fixed (Canvas Stadium, Valley Children's Stadium, Maverik Stadium and Gesa Field at Martin Stadium); only the visitors flex. The conference published projected pairings in February 2026 (Oregon State at Washington State Cougars; Texas State at Colorado State Rams; San Diego State at Fresno State Bulldogs; Boise State at Utah State Aggies), but retains the right to change them, and nothing is confirmed until at most six days before kickoff.

So rather than publish a total that assumes a fixture the conference has not committed to, each of these four is shown as a range spanning the nearest and furthest of the four possible venues, and ranked on the lower bound, the number defensible whichever way the flex lands. Where the uncertainty moves their position, the possible rank range is shown too. Every other column for these four is computed from the 4–5 trips each already has confirmed. They become exact figures once the matchups are locked.

No team is excluded. All 138 FBS programs for 2026 are ranked, including the four newcomers: Delaware, Missouri State, Sacramento State and North Dakota State.
