San Francisco 49ers will cover 37,892 round-trip miles across 9 trips in 2026, more than any other NFL team and 4 times what Carolina Panthers face at the bottom of the table (8,634). Across all 32 teams the season adds up to 640,312 miles over 280 trips.
The 2026 schedule sends teams across 9 international games in 7 cities on 4 continents. Jacksonville Jaguars carry the heaviest international load at 2 games abroad, while 16 teams stay entirely within the United States. The single longest trip belongs to Los Angeles Rams: 7,929 miles one-way to Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne.
The gap between divisions reflects geography more than scheduling. NFC West averages 27,951 miles per team against the AFC North's 14,097 (2.0×). By per-trip average, which strips out schedule volume, San Francisco 49ers lead at 4,210 miles per trip.
How these numbers are calculated
Distances are great-circle (straight-line) miles between stadium coordinates, not driving or flying distance. Every trip is counted as a round trip from the team's own stadium, so a 1,000-mile trip contributes 2,000 miles.
What counts as a trip: every 2026 regular-season game a team does not play at its own stadium. That includes the 9 games at a neutral-site venue — all of them international this season; both teams travel to those, so each game produces two trips. A team "hosting" a game in London, Melbourne or Madrid makes the same flight the visitor does, so the host's mileage includes it.
Trips, not away games. The table counts trips, not away games, because the two are not the same in the NFL. When the Jacksonville Jaguars "host" 2 games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley Stadium, the league calls them home games, but the team flies thousands of miles to play them. Counting only games where a team is the designated visitor would miss 2 of the Jacksonville Jaguars' 11 trips and 17,032 round-trip miles. Trip counts range from 8 to 11 across the league; most teams make 8 or 9.
The College Football Travel Index uses the same rule, but in college football the difference is rarely visible: the only neutral-site home games there are within the host's own metro (under 25 miles), so they are excluded rather than counted. That 25-mile floor applies here too — it just never triggers, because no NFL team "hosts" a game across town.
What does not count: preseason and postseason games are excluded because the playoff field is not set during the regular season, and preseason travel is not comparable to a competitive schedule.
"International trips" counts games played at a venue outside the United States, whether the team is the designated home or away side. "Time zones crossed" is the total time zone boundaries between the team's home city and each game venue, summed across all trips, using standard UTC offsets. A game in the same time zone contributes zero; a London trip from the Eastern time zone contributes five. This measures cumulative jet-lag exposure across the season.
"Longest trip" is the one-way distance to the furthest venue, so unlike the mileage totals it is not doubled for the return leg. "Toughest stretch" is the heaviest run of three consecutive trips by round-trip mileage; home games between trips do not break the run.
